Part of the family of plastic chairs designed by Charles and Ray Eames. Designed in 1950, this classic still looks as good as it did then, with a range of updated colours to choose from. The DSX (Dining Height Side Chair X-Base) version of this chair features A four-legged tubular steel base and the organically shaped side chair shell.
This iconic chair was designed by legendary duo Charles and Ray Eames in 1950. For years, the designer couple explored the fundamental idea of a one-piece seat shell moulded to fit the contours of the human body. After various experiments, the Plastic Armchair (A-shell) and Plastic Side Chair (S-shell) were launched on the market in 1950 as the very first mass-produced plastic chairs in the history of furniture.
Originally made from fibreglass, today Vitra manufactures these comfortable seat shells in polypropylene (a more ecological material), offering a multitude of bases, shell colours and upholstery options. This allows for countless different combinations to used in the widest range of settings – from dining rooms, living rooms and home offices to office workspaces and conference rooms; from restaurants and cafés to break rooms and cafeterias; from waiting areas and auditoriums to terraces and gardens.
Seat shell: dyed-through polypropylene.
Base: non-stacking four-legged tubular steel base. The powder-coated version is suitable for outdoor use. (DSX = Dining Height Side Chair X-Base)
