64 Barstool designed by the Alvar Aalto in 1935.
Alvar Aalto (1898-1976), one of the founders of Artek, was born in Kuortane, Finland. He is recognized today as one of the great masters of modern architecture. Aalto began designing furnishings as a natural and important extension of his architectural thinking. His first modern piece of furniture was created in 1931-32.
Artek’s collection is based on the original idea of standards and systems, initiated by Alvar Aalto’s bent wood experiments that resulted in the L-leg system. The L-leg, a solid wood leg with a laminated part bent at 90°, was patented in 1933 and quickly became a standard component of Aalto’s furniture designs.
