New colours for 2018.
A masterpiece of modern furniture design, the Domus Chair was created as part of a series of furniture for the Domus Academica student housing complex in Helsinki. Comfortable enough to allow sitting for long periods of time, the Domus Chair achieved great success internationally, becoming known as “The Finn Chair.” The characteristic short arms mean that the Domus Chair can be pulled close to a table, perfect for studying at a desk and dining, while offering the necessary support and comfort. Designed in 1946 by Ilmari Tapiovaara, Domus Chairs have been placed in homes and public spaces around the world ever since.
This year, Artek’s archive was the inspiration for a new season of colours. Analysing the various finishes which have been used over the decades, certain guiding motives became obvious: the use of dark stains on wooden surfaces as well as the application of luminous greens and strong signal reds or its combinations. The Artek Colour 2018 collection builds upon these historic finds, introducing a powerful combination of a deep walnut stained birch with bright red and pale green lacquers as well as with linoleum in smokey blue, pewter and olive green. It features a selection of Artek’s most beloved chairs, Domus and Chair 69, as well as Stools and round and rectangular Aalto tables in the most popular sizes.
